The 2012 ornament focuses on President Taft's White Motor Company Model "M" 40 H.P. Steam Touring, Taft's favorite automobile. A dark green body convertible with black fenders and mint green pin-striping with shiny brass fixtures, Taft purchased the vehicle with his own funds between his election and his inauguration. Taft was the first U.S. President to use motorcars exclusively instead of horse drawn transportation while in office. He established the first official White House automobile fleet in 1909, the beginning of the first Presidential motorcade in history. President Taft's Model "M" survives at the Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, Massachusetts and can be seen there on exhibit.
It has been said that Taft was a large jovial man with a likeness to Santa Claus no one could deny. He was also a very warm, generous and good man who loved the Christmas season. His famously generous nature was apparent in the number of Christmas gifts he gave to friends, family and staff members. President Taft believed more in the act of giving and his Christmas list was often into the hundreds.
The detailed automobile is a replica of what it might have been like to see the President and Mrs. Taft being chauffeured about town at Christmastime with arms full of presents for friends and family, a joyous time for the President which he most enjoyed. The brass ornament is intricately depicted in vibrant colors with luxurious gleaming 24 kt. gold accents and festive embellishments. Details include the "White" logo on the front grill of the car and the official White House seal on the doors.
