- 1988

- The 1985 White House Christmas Ornament commemorates the days of James and Dolley Madison in the President’s House. The fifth in a special series of holiday ornaments, the Madison ornament is gold-plated and was commissioned by the White House Historical Association to hang on the Christmas tree in the Blue Room of the White House. The hospitality and warmth of the Madisons is symbolic of the spirit of hospitality we all enjoy during the holiday season.

- The White House Christmas ornament for 1986 replicates the south front of the President’s House as it appeared 162 years ago for the Christmas and New Year’s festivities of our fifth President, James Monroe. The ornament was commissioned by the White House Historical Association to hang on the Christmas Tree in the Blue Room of the White House.

Monroe had the half-circle portico built in the previous year, giving the presidential mansion not only a “back porch,” but one of its most distinctive architectural features. There had been heretofore only a plain wooden balcony built to the “bow” projection central to the south front. The portico was completed in time to be used by the Revolutionary War hero, General Lafayette, on his triumphant return to the United States for a visit in 1824.

- The sandstone portal and double mahogany doors of the White House, decorated for Christmas with the traditional evergreen wreaths and red poinsettias, set the theme for the 1987 White House Christmas Ornament. The ornament for 1987 commemorates the presidency of John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States who lived in the White House from 1825 until 1829. President Adams did not build the great doorway, but its rich stone carvings show his favorite motifs of oak leaves and acorns.

- The 1988 White House Christmas ornament celebrate Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States. No administration was more generally welcomed at its inception, few have been so highly praised as they took place, and even fewer have been as vividly remembered. A legendary Jackson is commemorated in the dramatic equestrian statue in bronze that stands in Lafayette Park, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. For the Christmas ornament, the White House Historical Association symbolizes a more intimate Jackson at home.
