Getting New Volunteers: need a hand? Ask the political campaigners

With the presidential elections over, the news is littered with stories of political campaign volunteers and canvassers across the country that, now that the race is over, is looking for a cause to get them involved in. These people are drawn to things from both an emotional and intellectual standpoint. These are also people who, regardless of party, were seeking an agent for change. Does your organization align with changing the status quo?

So do some digging in your area to find the list of people who were active in the recent election, and message to them for some help. Here are some suggestions on how to get the word out to local campaign volunteers:

· Ask your local party mechanism if they would be willing to share their list with you. While you may not readily be given this information, if you are a non-profit or a local charity, you might make some headway.

· Visit the candidate websites – you may likely find regional and even local information about how to connect with these advocates.

· Check your local college campuses – you might not only uncover paid staffers, but also volunteers, especially through the Young Republicans or Young Democrats groups.

· Utilize social media outlets – social media is here and now. Whether you scan the various political website and blogs, there are people still talking about the election, and who are looking for new avenues to focus their passions.

· Get your word out through local media – people are still glued to the newspapers, radio and television as a result of this political race. Appeal to them through the media. You might even be able to get a free PSA (Public Service Announcement) if your cause is not for profit.

· Spread the word though the local community – so much of the work done by these campaigners came out of churches and youth and family centers. Make a flyer and post it in these venues, as well as any local stores or businesses that are willing to help.

Your efforts might not only gain some helping hands, but potential donors as well.
