MD Anderson Cancer Center

Celebrating more than six decades of Making Cancer History®, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is located in central Houston on the sprawling campus of the Texas Medical Center. It is one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention.
Since 1944, nearly 800,000 patients have turned to M. D. Anderson for cancer care in the form of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or combinations of these and other treatments. This multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer was pioneered at M. D. Anderson. Because its experts focus on cancer, they are renowned for their ability to treat all types of cancer, including rare or uncommon diseases.
If you've ever witnessed an energetic elementary school art class, you've seen creativity in action. But the relationship between children and art goes far beyond fun. Creative activities can help children with cancer relax, express their feelings and cope with their condition.
The Children's Art Project (CAP) at M. D. Anderson works with outpatients and inpatients to create artwork that is reproduced and sold as cards, calendars, clothing, jewelry and more. Proceeds fund programs for patients at the hospital.
"The mission of the Children's Art Project is to make life better for children with cancer, and we do this through funding programs such as creative arts, summer camps and child life that help children cope with their disease," said Shannan Murray, executive director of the Children's Art Project.
In 2000 the Children’s Art Project developed its first annual collectible with ChemArt based on the art work of one of the Center’s pediatric patients. Over the next five years the ornament has carved out a niche of collectors. Proceeds from the sale of this series and other products generated more than $1.5 million in 2004 to fund pediatric patient programs like scholarships, camps and in-hospital education at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
